Roman Quarries

In the heart of Sapienza University, beneath the new student residence, some of Rome’s oldest grey tuff quarries were discovered—the same stone used in the construction of the Palatine Hill.

The project transforms this archaeological heritage into a space that can once again be experienced and understood. A suspended, transparent walkway guides visitors through the quarry, revealing the ancient surfaces beneath their feet.

Light reveals the materiality and depth of the space, following the geometry of the quarry and highlighting the rock, the tuff blocks, and the traces of their ancient workmanship.
